TRAVEL
VARANA Hotel Krabi, Thailand
The heart of Varana Hotel is “the Wellcation Experience”, or a fulfilling holiday experience derived from wholesome meals, sound sleep, fun excursions, environmentally friendly and sustainable tourism – one that values our natural resources and communities. We curate your experiences through a combination of fun lifestyle activities, fantastic food tastings, relaxing and cozy rooms, sustainable wellness and natural healing. The spa services are the highlight at Varana, where our ancestral heritage of Thai medicine is infused with other Eastern folk wisdom. We also provide plenty of sporting facilities, both indoor and outdoor. Every inch has been designed to reflect the Varana DNA, which is to be a hotel for fun and valuable learning experiences, as well as a model hotel for sustainability. The name VARANA itself conveys its respect for nature: an equilibrium in the triangle of “Vana” (forest), “nava” (water), and “nara” (humans).
A Minimalist Luxury with Sustainability at Heart
From a design perspective, Varana’s concept is a Minimalist Luxury that stresses on simplicity, grace, luxury, and modernity. With the idea that “less is more”, the design minimizes the use of wasteful materials while maximizing utility and safety. Natural earth tones are used to evoke feelings of lightness and comfort. More importantly, sustainability is built into every detail through careful study and design by a specialized team consisting of architects, engineers, interior designers, and environmental experts.
This commitment has translated into a sustainable design in the construction and decoration of the hotel. For example, we use a highly efficient air-conditioning system that can save energy by up to 40% compared to an ordinary system. Through a Heat Exchange System, the heat from the air-conditioning system is then used for heating water in the hotel. Hence, that heat does not go to waste. A waterbank has been installed throughout the hotel area, which helps reduce wastewater disposal, provides moisture for the soil, and keeps the trees and plants green all year round. Our water treatment system uses nanotechnology to process clean water, thereby enhancing our ability to reduce water pollution. For the hotel décor, leftover materials ranging from wood to ceramics, plastic bottles, fabrics, etc. have been recycled or repurposed into beautiful decorative materials.
Sports, Excursion & Activities
4 Swimming Pools
Varana is the first hotel in Krabi to have an Olympic-size swimming pool (7 x 50 meters), along with a kids’ pool, a fun pool, and a physical therapy pool, which will satisfy the needs of all those who love swimming. The sporting area offers plenty of indoor activities. Most notable is our FAB fitness, a fully-equipped and functional gym that meets the international standards of a professional athlete training facility. The upper floor of this fitness center is a multi-purpose studio which can accommodate up to 60 persons for a number of activities including Body Pump, boxing, yoga, Pilates, and Zumba. All these activities are led by professional trainers. There is also a Street Gym or a network of pathways stretching a distance of 1 km around the hotel where our guests can go jogging, trekking, and wall climbing. In addition, we offer family activities such as cooking classes and farming for kids, where all members of the family can spend time together and get closer to nature. Moreover, we work with the community to promote cultural, gastronomic, and artisanal tourism. For example, we organize boat trips for our guests to learn about the seamen’s lifestyle, see the crab reserve, and try painting their own Krabi Batik fabric – a unique tradition in the region.
Energy Saving
“Our hotel will be a model for sustainability”. This was one of the first ideas ingrained onto the blueprint of Varana Hotel. We do not just incorporate sustainable design and select recycled materials, but we take a 360-degree approach to this. We have our own water management system or what we call a “waterbank” – an innovative way of storing clean water underground. This helps to keep the soil moist, thereby reducing wasteful irrigation, and helps our trees grow. The trees provide plenty of shade in our hotel area, which then helps the air-conditioning system in cooling the rooms faster. By saving both water and energy, we move closer to our end goal of conservation for the planet. All the water in the hotel is processed through an innovative nanotechnology system to guarantee cleanliness and safety. Another important goal for Varana is zero waste. We sort the leftover vegetables and egg shells for making fertilizer that is used in our hotel. After making juices, the leftover lemon and orange peels are fermented into a citric acid or a multi-purpose cleaner that can be used on floors and windows. It is our commitment to minimize the use of chemicals in our hotel. Aware that the laundry is a process that requires chemicals, we built our own facility so we can have control over this process and mitigate the environmental impact. We use organic detergents which are more environmentally friendly, and the water from the laundry is sent to our wastewater treatment system, where it gets recycled for use in watering our trees. For transportation, our EV Tuk Tuk Project transforms Thailand’s iconic Tuk Tuk into an electric version which is used to take guests and baggage to their rooms, pick up / drop off our guests at nearby locations, and deliver the laundry around the hotel. With a commitment that was conceived a decade ago, every facet of Varana Hotel is in line with the BCG or Bio-Circular-Green Model which strives for economic development together with social development and sustainability. This is what you will find at Varana, from the concept and construction to the decoration materials, all the way to the staff uniform, which is made of 100% recycled fabrics. It is our dedication to make Varana Hotel a destination that lingers on in the memories of our visitors, who get to enjoy a perfect getaway, a special treatment for the body, the mind, and the spirit. Guests would come here to refuel their inspirations, and – together with us – care for the planet.
