How did your journey began?

In 2021 I faced the challenge of a half Ironman race in Turkey, embracing my identity as a diabetic triathlete and fervently advocating for Type 2 diabetes awareness. It was a monumental step in my journey, one that ignited a passion to defy limits and inspire others. Unfortunately, my glucose did not survive that well across 3 sports and I gave up at 14km out of a 21km run.

How did you decide to take on a new goal after that experience?

With 2023 underway, I’ve embarked on a fresh mission, dedicated to raising awareness for those living with Type 2 diabetes. As a determined diabetic swimmer, I am thrilled to have secured a spot in the highly esteemed OCEANMAN World Championship, scheduled to unfold in the breathtaking waters of Phuket in December.

Reflecting on your journey, what message do you hope to convey to others living with Type 2 diabetes?

My journey is a journey of Progress: Reflecting on my 6th place finish in the 2022 OCEANMAN World Final Championship, I am convinced now more than ever that Type 2 diabetes should never be a hindrance in chasing our dreams. With a balanced blend of rigorous training and dedicated recovery, our bodies can achieve remarkable feats in the realm of endurance sports.

Can you tell us more about your training regimen and how you prepare for such a challenging competition?

My training routine has been meticulously crafted, encompassing immersive sessions in a 25m pool and invigorating open-water swims in Arabian Sea in Goa. The endurance I’ve built is a testament to the power of persistence and consistent effort. Strength training sessions and ice baths have helped raise my endurance further. The gym is a boring place – but with the right set of peers – It’s inspiring.

Open water swimming is undoubtedly an intense and unpredictable experience. What draws you to it?

Open water swimming has become an addictive and enthralling experience. The unpredictability of the tides and currents adds a thrilling dimension to my training. Contrasting with the controlled environment of a pool, the open sea, river, or lake experience unveils an entirely different realm of aquatic exploration.

Living with Type 2 diabetes presents its unique challenges. How do you manage these challenges while pursuing your athletic goals?

Living with Type 2 diabetes comes with its share of obstacles. Managing my daily metabolism through mindful eating, post-meal walks, and a balanced lifestyle has made a noticeable difference. However, there are tough days when I face tremors, chills, frequent urination, and other challenges head-on. Yet, each day is a testament to the strength within and a reminder of the importance of resilience in the face of adversity.

Thank you for sharing your inspiring journey with us. Your determination and advocacy are truly commendable.

It’s been my pleasure. Join me on this journey of resilience and triumph. Let’s rewrite the narrative around Type 2 diabetes, embracing the spirit of determination and perseverance in the pursuit of our dreams.
